Unlicensed drivers in Maryland cause car accidents

Law Offices of Joel L. Katz, LLC Team

Many people await the day when they are finally able to get their learner’s permit. Unfortunately, these inexperienced drivers often have a large amount to learn before they are able to drive unattended. As a result, Maryland has regulations in place restricting the driving of those who only have learner’s permits in an attempt to limit or prevent car accidents. In a recent case, authorities allege that a male who should not have been driving unsupervised crashed into a local cell phone store.

In early September, a 21-year-old driver allegedly crashed through the glass windows in the front of a Sprint store. According to reports, the sedan struck the front counter. The driver claims that his brakes malfunctioned which caused the accident. However, authorities counter that an inspection of the brakes showed they were working properly.

A customer standing at the counter was struck and transported to a hospital for treatment due to a head injury. A worker at the store was also treated for minor injuries. The driver was not injured, but faces several criminal charges including violating driving restrictions and failing to maintain control of his vehicle, causing a collision.

Some feel that car accidents such as this could possibly be avoided if drivers who are in the early learning stages are properly supervised. As a result of this accident, the customer at the store will likely face a long recovery with several hospital bills. As a result, he or she may also experience a loss in wages during the recovery process. In order to help cope with the financial repercussions, a civil suit filed in a Maryland court might be appropriate. If the injured person can prove that the driver’s negligence caused the accident, the court could order compensation.
