Recent medical malpractice case — man awarded almost $9M

A Maryland resident may go in for a routine medical procedure, only to later suffer complications and/or unforeseen side effects. Sometimes, an individual may instead suffer what they feel to be unnecessary pain and/or suffering while in the care of a medical professional. In some cases, perhaps a doctor failed to diagnose a serious condition during an earlier examination. If any of the above are the case, medical malpractice may have occurred.

A jury recently awarded a man almost $9 million in damages in an out-of-state medical malpractice suit that was filed around three years ago. The man and his wife filed the suit in 2013 against a health system and a surgeon after the man lost both of his lower legs. The suit alleged that he lost his legs due to poor decisions that eventually led to the man being in prolonged septic shock.

The suit said that blood flow was cut off from his legs, which caused gangrene in both of his feet. Both feet were later amputated from his mid-calf at a second hospital, as well as parts of his fingers on the man’s left hand. Although the jury absolved the surgeon of any liability, the hospital’s parent company was ordered to pay the victim $8.78 million.

Often, a victim’s injury must have damaging and severe consequences. When medical malpractice leads to overwhelming damages, which may include enduring hardship, suffering, living in constant pain, disability or loss of income, Maryland victims often choose to consult experienced personal injury attorneys. During a consultation, the attorney will assess whether the incident in question that resulted in either harm or death could be considered malpractice.
