Patient alleges medical malpractice after surgical procedure

Law Offices of Joel L. Katz, LLC Team

When individuals in Maryland require medical attention, they typically seek a medical professional or center they trust. Although these medical professionals and centers who provide treatment are highly-trained, mistakes unfortunately still occur sometimes. When this happens, people’s health is often at stake. When individuals are injured due to a medical professional’s negligence, the individual typically files a medical malpractice suit against the responsible party.

On a recent Monday in September, an out of state woman filed a medical malpractice suit against a spinal surgeon and the medical firms affiliated with him. The doctor and medical firms had been involved in a medical procedure the woman had undergone. The suit alleges that the woman suffered serious injuries as a result of this procedure.

The procedure, which took place on Sept. 22, 2011 in Chicago, involved cervical spine surgery. While the operation took place, the suit alleges that the surgeon, who was supervising personnel from a medical firm, misused surgical retractors, which damaged the patient’s vascular as well as neurological structures. This lead to the patient suffering neurological and vascular injuries as well as pain and emotional distress. The suit claims that the injuries suffered caused present and future medical expenses as well as lost wages.

When an individual in Maryland suffers an injury as a result from a medical professional’s negligence, he or she has the right to pursue a medical malpractice lawsuit against those responsible. Successfully navigated, this type of claim sometimes results in a monetary judgment for the damages suffered, which can help lessen some of the costs that are typically associated with these kinds of injuries. A medical malpractice victim typically begins this process by consulting an experienced personal injury attorney to assess the validity of his or her claim.
