Medical malpractice case results in $4.2 million award
Health care professionals in Maryland typically do everything they can to ensure their patients receive the best medical help available. Unfortunately, accidents sometimes occur which may result in an injury or worsening of the condition. When this occurs due to the negligence of a medical professional, the patient sometimes seeks to file a medical malpractice claim.
Recently, a court out of state awarded a man $4.2 million for a serious injury that he suffered as a result of medical malpractice. The man claimed that his doctor’s misdiagnosis lead him to suffer an injury during his surgery. The injury involved the man’s left shoulder, which was rendered unusable after a surgeon who was operating on him damaged the man’s spinal accessory nerve, according to the lawsuit.
The damage left the man with a series of serious side effects, including nerve palsy — an inability to raise his arm above his head or extend it — as well as his left shoulder becoming permanently disfigured. He is currently unable to use his left arm. If his doctor had given a proper diagnosis, the unnecessary surgery would never have occurred, according to the claim.
In the state of Maryland, when an individual is injured due to the apparent negligence of his or her health care professional, he or she is entitled to file a medical malpractice suit. Successfully navigated, this suit can help with medical bills, lost pay, and pain and suffering. It can also help to ensure that the same mistake doesn’t happen again to another patient. An experienced attorney who is familiar with medical malpractice claims is often consulted to help determine whether a viable case exists and to offer ongoing guidance and support throughout the claims process.
