Hit-and-run accident results in fatality

Law Offices of Joel L. Katz, LLC Team

An accident occurred recently in Maryland that took an individual’s life. The Baltimore Police Department is still looking for the person they say caused the fatal hit-and-run accident, which occurred on a recent Monday night in January. When such accidents occur, the deceased victim’s surviving family members are typically entitled to file a wrongful death suit against the party or parties believed responsible.

A Baltimore police officer was stopped at red light in the southbound lane of traffic. He heard a loud noise, after which he says he saw a van exiting the area. Upon further investigation, the officer discovered a man who was lying unconscious on the snowy sidewalk.

The officer exited his vehicle in order to render aid to the man, as well as call for medics. When the medics arrived, they transported the victim to a local hospital, where the man died a short while later. A witness to the hit-and-run accident also saw the van and heard a loud noise, but thought the van had collided with the road’s center median.

Currently, the driver of the van has yet to be located, though Maryland law enforcement authorities are often successful in apprehending hit-and-run drivers. The victim’s loved ones will be entitled to file a wrongful death claim for financial relief against the driver who caused the hit-and-run accident. Successfully presented, this type of claim may result in the entry of a monetary judgment, and any restitution paid may be used to help to lessen the financial burdens often imposed on the surviving families of fatal car accident victims.
