Could a two-second distraction cause a car accident?

Law Offices of Joel L. Katz, LLC Team

As hands-free car technology proliferates, the temptation to take one’s eyes off the road increases exponentially. Yet according to a recent study, even a two-second glance away from the road when driving at high speeds might increase the risk of a motor vehicle accident.

Researchers measured drivers’ responses in a driving simulator, along with eye-tracking equipment. After a two-second visual interruption, drivers’ reactions to potential hazards, like a car cutting ahead in traffic, were measurably lower. Researchers believe that even a two-second glance can be dangerous because it may take drivers’ eyes a period to readjust when they return their gaze to the road.

Yet how could a victim of a car accident prove that the other driver wasn’t watching the road? Our personal injury law firm focuses on distracted driver accident litigation and can help investigate all sources of evidence.

We can work with experts to analyze a crash, possibly revealing where the other driver’s reaction was delayed or negligent. We can also help crash victims frame their litigation strategy and request an appropriate amount of damages. We can also look for short-term solutions to cash flow problems arising from medical care costs or lost wages. If an insurance company is slow to respond, our law office will get to work.

Safe, attentive driving is a duty imposed on everyone behind the wheel. However, the convenience of hand-held technology seems to invite rationalizations, as if taking one’s eyes off the road were not a breach of that duty of care.
