Child falls from Ferris wheel, suffers traumatic brain injury

Law Offices of Joel L. Katz, LLC Team

A traumatic brain injury can be a devastating type of injury that often has lifelong consequences for both the victim and his or her loved ones. A traumatic brain injury (TBI) may result from just about any type of accident in Maryland, including those involving cars, boats and even carnival rides. A child suffered such an injury at an amusement park in another state recently.

The accident occurred on a recent Monday night in August. A 6-year-old girl suffered a traumatic brain injury due to falling around 45 feet from a Ferris wheel. Around 6:15 p.m. at a county fair, the girl and two others fell to the ground: her sister, as well as another girl.

The 10-year-old sister is currently in stable condition but suffered forearm injuries, according to a local Tennessee medical center. The other girl, a 16-year-old, was originally listed in critical condition; however, her status was recently reported as stable. According to the officials’ preliminary report, mechanical failure was the cause of the accident, though a full report has yet to be completed. According to officials at the fairground, it was unknown when the last inspection of the ride occurred.

The parents of the girl who suffered the traumatic brain injury may choose to pursue premises liability claims against the owner of property where the accident occurred. If their claim is successfully presented, they may be compensated in the form of a monetary award. This compensation might be used to help defray the ongoing costs and care that is typically involved for the treatment of a serious brain injury. An experienced Maryland personal injury attorney is often consulted for help with these matters. The attorney will most often begin by assessing the viability of the potential case.
