Car accidents: Maryland girl, 10, injured

Law Offices of Joel L. Katz, LLC Team

A girl struck by a car is in critical care, according to local sources. Maryland police have called in experts in car accidents to reconstruct the scene of the incident as part of their ongoing investigation. No charges have yet been filed in association with the case.

According to the reconstruction team, it appears as though a vehicle was traveling south on Old Camp Road when the incident occurred on the night of Dec. 2. The exact specifics of the accident are not yet known, but the 10-year-old girl was struck with enough force to seriously injure her. She was airlifted to a hospital in nearby Washington and was placed in critical care. As of this writing her condition is said to be improving and the doctors expect her to recover.

Little is known about the driver of the car that struck the girl. Police have not taken the driver into custody, and at this point too little is known about the accident for police to file charges. They have also not speculated as to whether alcohol or high speeds were factors in the accident, though it seems likely this will factor into their ongoing investigation.

Car accidents involving pedestrians are often more complicated to suss out in a legal sense, because there are certain variables involved that do not factor into play in typical accidents. However, if Maryland police determine the driver of the car was negligent or otherwise responsible for the accident, the driver will likely face criminal charges. Separately, the family of the injured girl may choose to file a personal injury suit against the driver for damages suffered in the accident.
