Accidents involving drunk driver increase on July 4

Law Offices of Joel L. Katz, LLC Team

With the Fourth of July holiday approaching, many in Maryland are making plans for fun and exciting celebrations. Some may plan to attend the parade and fireworks in Annapolis, and others may be crossing the Bay Bridge heading to the shore. Certainly, these events will include music, summer foods and beverages, and very good friends to make the celebration complete. Unfortunately, for some, the celebration will end with a motor vehicle accident caused by a drunk driver.

A recent study shows that July 4 is the most dangerous driving day of the year nationwide. Across the country, an average of 119 people die in traffic accidents on Independence Day, and 47 percent of those fatalities involve alcohol. While many might believe New Year’s Day sees the highest number of alcohol-related fatalities, the average for Jan. 1 is typically 41.6 percent.

Overall, drunk drivers are responsible for about 28 percent of all accidents throughout the year. Mothers Against Drunk Driving in Maryland urges revelers to stay off the road even if they have had only one drink. With the many options available for finding a safe way home, driving under the influence and risking the lives of others on the road may be a decision one regrets for the rest of his or her life.

Alcohol-related accidents cause suffering and heartache for many in Maryland, whether it happens on a holiday or any day of the year. Families who lose loved ones may never be the same after facing the emotional, physical and financial trauma of an accident involving a drunk driver. Seeking the advice of an attorney has helped many find a way to claim compensation for their suffering.
