Accidents involving drunk driver increase on July 4

With the Fourth of July holiday approaching, many in Maryland are making plans for fun and exciting celebrations. Some may plan to attend the parade and fireworks in Annapolis, and others may be crossing the Bay Bridge heading to the shore. A recent study shows that July 4 is the most dangerous driving day of the year nationwide. Across the country, an average of 119 people die in traffic accidents on Independence Day, and 47 percent of those fatalities involve alcohol. While many might believe New Year’s Day sees the highest number of alcohol-related fatalities, the average for Jan. 1 is typically 41.6 percent.

Overall, drunk drivers are responsible for about 28 percent of all accidents throughout the year.
